Honolulu (/ˌhoʊnoʊˈluːluː/; Hawaiian: Honolulu)
is the state capital and the most populous city in the U.S. state of
Hawaii.
It is the county seat of
the City and County of Honolulu.
Hawaii is a major tourist destination and Honolulu, situated on the island of Oahu, is the main gateway to Hawaii
and a major gateway into the United States.
The city is also a major hub for international business, military defense, as
well as famously being host to a diverse variety of east-west and Pacific
culture, cuisine, and traditions.
Honolulu is both the westernmost and the southernmost
major American city. For statistical purposes, the U.S. Census Bureau
recognizes the approximate area commonly referred to as "City of
Honolulu" (not to be confused with the "City and County") as a census county
division (CCD) Honolulu is a major financial center of the
islands and of the Pacific Ocean.
The population of Honolulu CCD was 390,738 at the 2010 censuswhile the population of the consolidated city and
county was 953,207.
In the Hawaiian language, Honolulu
means "sheltered bay" or "place of shelter"[citation needed];
alternatively, it means "calm port" The old name is said to be Kou, a
district roughly encompassing the area from Nuuanu Avenue to Alakea Street and
from Hotel Street to Queen Street which is the heart of the present downtown
district. The city has been the capital of the Hawaiian islands since 1845 and
gained historical recognition following the Japanese
attack on Pearl Harbor
near the city on December 7,
1941.

collection of natural history specimens and the world's largest collection of
Hawaiiana and Pacific culture artifacts.[42]
The Honolulu Zoo is
the main zoological
institution in Hawaii while the Waikiki Aquarium is
a working marine
biology laboratory. The Waikiki Aquarium is partnered with
the University of
Hawaii and other universities worldwide. Established for
appreciation and botany,
Honolulu is home to several gardens: Foster
Botanical Garden, Liliʻuokalani Botanical Garden, Walker Estate,
among others.

the Neal
Blaisdell Center Concert Hall and Arena, and the Waikiki Shell.
Visual arts
Various institutions for the visual arts are located
in Honolulu.
The Honolulu
Museum of Art is endowed with the largest collection of Asian and
Western art in Hawaii. It also has the largest collection of Islamic art,
housed at the Shangri La
estate. The museum hosts a film and video program dedicated to arthouse and
world cinema in the museum's Doris Duke Theatre, named for the museum's
historic patroness Doris Duke.
The Contemporary Museum is the only contemporary art museum in the state. It has two
locations: main campus in Makiki
and a multi-level gallery in downtown Honolulu at
the First
Hawaiian Center.
The Hawaii State
Art Museum (also downtown) boasts pieces by local artists as
well as traditional Hawaiian art.
The museum is administered by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
Honolulu also annually holds the Hawaii International Film Festival

Located at the western end of the CDP, Honolulu International Airport
(HNL) is the principal aviation gateway to the state of Hawaii. Kalaeloa Airport is
primarily a commuter facility used by unscheduled air taxis, general aviation
and transient and locally based military aircraft.
Highways
Honolulu has been ranked as having the nation’s worst
traffic congestion, beating former record holder Los Angeles.
Drivers waste on average over 58 hours per year on congested roadways. The following freeways,
part of the Interstate Highway System serve Honolulu:
- Interstate H-1, which, coming into the city
from the west, passes Hickam Air Force Base and Honolulu International
Airport, runs just north of Downtown and continues eastward through Makiki
and Kaimuki, ending at Waialae/Kahala. H-1 connects to Interstate H-2 from Wahiawa and Interstate H-3 from Kaneohe, west of the CDP.
- Interstate
H-201—also
known as the Moanalua Freeway and sometimes numbered as its former number,
Hawaii State Rte. 78—connects two points along H-1: at Aloha Stadium and Fort Shafter. Close to H-1 and Aloha
Stadium, H-201 has an exchange with the western terminus of Interstate H-3 to the windward side of Oahu (Kaneohe). This complex of connecting
ramps, some directly between H-1 and H-3, is in Halawa.
- H2 - connects H1 with the Mililani area in the
center of the island.
- H3 - connects H1 with the Kaneohe (windward) side
of the island.
Other major highways that link Honolulu proper with
other parts of the Island of Oahu are:
- Pali Highway, State Rte. 61, crosses north
over the Koolau range via the Pali Tunnels to connect to Kailua and Kaneohe on the windward side of the
Island.
- Likelike
Highway, State
Rte. 63, also crosses the Koolau to Kaneohe via the Wilson Tunnels.
- Kalanianaole Highway, State Rte. 72, runs
eastward from Waialae/Kahala to Hawaii
Kai and
around the east end of the island to Waimanalo Beach.
- Kamehameha
Highway, State
Rts. 80, 83, 99 and 830, runs westward from near Hickam Air Force Base to Aiea and beyond, eventually running
through the center of the island and ending in Kaneohe.
Like most major American cities, the Honolulu
metropolitan area experiences heavy traffic congestion during rush hours,
especially to and from the western suburbs of Kapolei, 'Ewa Beach, Aiea, Pearl City, Waipahu,
and Mililani.
Public transport
Honolulu Authority
for Rapid Transportation
In November 2010, voters approved a charter amendment
to create a public transit authority to oversee the planning, construction,
operation and future extensions to Honolulu's future rail system (see below).
Operations began on July 1, 2011. The Honolulu Authority for Rapid
Transportation (HART) currently includes a 10-member board of directors; three
members appointed by the mayor, three members selected by the Honolulu City
Council, and the city and state transportation directors.
Bus
Established by former Mayor Frank F. Fasi as
the replacement for the Honolulu Rapid Transit Company (HRT), Honolulu's TheBus
system has been twice honored by the American Public Transportation Association
bestowing the title of "America's Best Transit System" for 1994–1995
and 2000–2001. TheBus operates 107 routes serving Honolulu and most major
cities and towns on Oahu. TheBus comprises a fleet of 531 buses, and is run by
the non-profit corporation Oahu Transit Services in conjunction with the city
Department of Transportation Services. Honolulu is ranked 4th for highest
per-capita use of mass transit in the United States.
Rail
The City and County of Honolulu is currently
constructing a 20-mile (32 km) rail transit line that will connect
Honolulu with cities and suburban areas near Pearl Harbor
and in the Leeward and West Oahu regions. The Honolulu High-Capacity Transit
Corridor Project is aimed at alleviating traffic
congestion for West Oahu commuters while being integral in the
westward expansion of the metropolitan area. The project, however, has been
criticized by opponents of rail for its cost, delays, and potential environmental
impacts, but the line is expected to have large ridership.
Climate
Honolulu experiences a tropical semi-arid climate (Köppen classification Bsh),
with a mostly dry summer season, due to a rain shadow
effect. Temperatures vary little throughout the months, with average high
temperatures of 80–90 °F (27–32 °C) and average lows of 65–75 °F
(18–24 °C) throughout the year. Temperatures reach or exceed 90 °F
(32 °C) on an average 38 days annually, with lows in the upper 50s °F
(14–15 °C) occurring once or twice a year. The highest recorded temperature was
95 °F (35 °C) during a heat wave in September 1998. The highest
recorded temperature in the state was also recorded later that day in Ni'ihau.
The lowest recorded temperature was 52 °F (11 °C) on February 16,
1902, and January 20, 1969.
Annual average rainfall is 17.05 in
(433 mm), which mainly occurs during the winter months of October through
early April, with very little rainfall during the summer. Honolulu has an
average of 278 sunny days and 90 wet days per year. Although Honolulu is known
to have a wet and dry season, it is unnoticeable. This is mainly because light
showers fall in the summer while heavier rain falls during the winter. Yet,
both seasons experience the same amount of rainy days.
Although the city is
situated in the upper tropics, hurricanes
are quite rare. The last recorded hurricane that hit the area was Category 4 Hurricane Iniki in
1992. Tornadoes
are also uncommon and usually strike once every 15 years.
The largest city and airport in the Hawaiian Islands,
Honolulu acts as a natural gateway to the islands' large tourism industry,
which brings millions of visitors and contributes $10 billion annually to the
local economy. Honolulu's location in the Pacific also makes it a large
business and trading hub, particularly between the East and the West.
Other important aspects of the city's economy include military defense,
research and development, and manufacturing.
Waikiki
Waikiki is best known for Waikīkī Beach, the
white sand beach shoreline fronting the neighborhood.
Waikīkī is home to public places including Kapiʻolani Park, Fort de Russy Military Reservation, Kahanamoku Lagoon, Kūhiō Beach Park,
and Ala
Wai Harbor.
A few small hotels opened in the 1880s. In 1893,
Greek-American George
Lycurgus leased the guest house of Allen Herbert and renamed
it the "Sans Souci" (French for "without worries") creating
one of the first beach resorts. Later that year Robert
Louis Stevenson stayed at the resort; subsequently it became a
popular destination for tourists from the mainland The area at coordinates 21°15′49″N
157°49′17″W is still called "Sans Souci Beach"
The
area is filled with large resort hotels, such as the Hilton
Hawaiian Village, the Halekulani hotel,
the Hyatt Regency Waikīkī, the Sheraton Waikīkī,
and historic hotels dating back to the early 20th century (such as the Moana Surfrider
Hotel and the Royal
Hawaiian Hotel). The beach hosts many events a year, including surf
competitions, outdoor performances, hula dancing
and outrigger
canoe races.
Waikīkī beach as seen from Diamond Head
The neighborhood extends from the Ala Wai Canal (a
channel dug to drain former wetlands) on the west and north, to Diamond
Head (Lēʻahi) on the east. Waikīkī Beach is noted
for its views of the Diamond Head tuff cone,
its usually warm and cloud-free climate and its surf break.
The Waikīkī skyline is now dotted with an abundance of
both high-rises and resort hotels. The beach is actually fairly short, with
half of it marked off for surfers. For some distance into the ocean the water
is quite shallow, although there are numerous rocks on the bottom. As with most
ocean beaches the waves can have some force, particularly on windy days. The
surf at Waikīkī is known for its long rolling break, making it ideal for long
boarding, tandem surfing and beginners.
Main thoroughfares
Waikīkī's main thoroughfare is Kalakaua Avenue, named
after King
Kalakaua, which houses most of the high-end hotels (Royal
Hawaiian, Sheraton, Hyatt, Moana Surfrider
Hotel), most of the luxury designer brand stores (Apple Store, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Burberry, Dior, Tiffany &
Co., Fendi, Cartier, Gucci
& Coach)
and popular surf clothing brand stores (Quiksilver, Billabong, Volcom).
Waikīkī's other main thoroughfare, Kuhio Avenue, named after Prince Kuhio, is better known for
its restaurants, cafes and grocers, along with its clubs, nightlife and prostitution.
Beach in Wakiki
Over
time, Waikīkī beach has had problems with erosion, leading to the construction
of groynes and beach
replenishment projects. For example, in the 1920s and 1930s sand
was imported from Manhattan Beach, California, via
ship and barge to Waikīkī. Importing stopped in the 1970s. Officials are
looking for ways to sustain the existing sand by eliminating loss due to tide
flow. Subject to permits, a partial restoration was completed in the spring of
2012. The proposed project imported sand from nearby shoals and
widened the 1,700-foot (520 m) long beach by about 37 feet (11 m)
between the Royal Hawaiian Hotel
concrete groin and the Kūhiō Beach crib wall. The project restored the beach to
its 1985 shoreline.
Set 750m above sea
level, and protected by a fortress of watchful volcanoes 190km southeast of
Jakarta, BANDUNG is the third largest city in Indonesia and a centre of
industry and traditional Sundanese arts – with plenty of cultural performances
for tourists – though it suffers from incredible traffic pollution and
uninteresting modern developments. Sundanese culture has remained intact here
since the fifth century when the first Hindu Sundanese settled in this part of
West Java. Modern Bandung's main tourist attraction is nearby Tangkbuhan Prahu
volcano, from where there's a very pleasant two-hour forest walk down to the
city, too.
The Dutch spotted
the potential of this lush, cool plateau and its fertile volcanic slopes in the
mid-seventeenth century, and set about cultivating coffee and rice here,
settling in the area to live in the early nineteenth century. Several relics
from the city's colonial era remain, including some of the elegant shops along
Jalan Braga, and some fine buildings on Jalan Asia-Afrika.
YOGYAKARTA
(pronounced "Jogjakarta" and often just shortened to
"Jogja") ranks as one of the best-preserved and most attractive
cities in Java, and is a major centre for the classical Javanese arts of batik,
ballet, drama, music, poetry and puppet shows. At its heart is Yogya's first
family, the Hamengkubuwonos, whose elegant palace lies at the centre of Yogya's
quaint old city, the Kraton, itself concealed behind high castellated walls.
Tourists flock here, attracted not only by the city's courtly splendour but
also by the nearby temples of Prambanan and Borobudur, so there are more hotels
in Yogya than anywhere else in Java and, unfortunately, a correspondingly high
number of touts, pickpockets and con artists.
Sultan Hamengkubuwono I (also known as
Mangkubumi) established his court here in 1755, spending the next 37 years
building the new capital, with the Kraton as the centrepiece and the court at
Solo as the blueprint. In 1946, the capital of the newly declared Republic of
Indonesia was moved to Yogya from Jakarta, and the Kraton became the unofficial
headquarters for the republican movement. The royal household of Yogya
continues to enjoy almost slavish devotion from its subjects and the current
sultan, Hamengkubuwono X, remains an influential politician.

JEJU
ISLAND
Located southwest of the Korean
Peninsula, Jejudo Island (제주도) is a volcanic island in the shape of an oval that measures
73km from west to east, and 31km from north to south. As Korea’s most
southern region, the weather on Jejudo Island remains significantly warmer
than the mainland even during the cold winter months. Jejudo Island is
sometimes referred to as “Samdado Island” (삼다도, meaning the “three many”) because of its abundance of rocks,
women, and wind. Wind from the ocean blows steadily throughout the year and
past volcanic activity has littered the island with an assortment of
beautiful and unusually-shaped black rocks. The island’s reputation of having
an abundance of women points back to the time when fishing was the primary
means of income and many men were lost at sea.
|
||||||||
Unique Costal Culture and
Breathtaking Natural Beauty
|
||||||||
Before the
invention of modern means of transportation, travel to and from the mainland
was often a difficult and dangerous journey that few attempted. Since the
island was cut off from the mainland in this way, the people on the island
developed their own unique culture and dialect.
Out of this culture was born a set of unusual icons that demonstrate the uniqueness of the island: "Haenyeo,” "Dolhareubang," "Galot," and "Bangsatap." Back in the days when Jejudo Island was a land of fishing villages, the local women were responsible for a large part of the family’s income. "Haenyeo” (해녀, female divers) often went diving to collect shellfish and edible seaweed, filling the quiet sea air with whistles announcing their catch. Every visitor to Jeju is sure to see their fair share of Dolhareubang (돌하르방, literally "old grandfather stone statues”). Sometimes serious-looking, sometimes almost comical, these statues dot the landscape and have become one of the most widely-recognized symbols of the island. The word “Galot” (갈옷) refers to traditional Jeju clothing that is dyed with persimmon juice. Often associated with the area’s agricultural way of life, these orange-hued, lightweight pieces of clothing are a trademark of Jeju. Another special sight are the Bangsatap (방사탑) piled all around the island: at houses, beaches, and even tourist attractions. These small, round towers made of many stones were thought to ward off evil, protect the village, and bring prosperity to the people. It is because of this deep-seated belief that one can still see Bangsatap near the entranceways of many buildings. In addition to having its own unique culture, Jeju is full of breathtaking sights and unusual attractions: World Heritage Sites (such as Hallasan Mountain and Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak) and sandy beaches alongside turquoise waters. Small mountains ((called Oreum (오름) in Jeju dialect)) are found all across the island. There are said to be more than 365 oreums, more than one for each day of the year! The "Jeju Olle" paths offer a great opportunity to explore this unique landscape, leading visitors among quiet places off the beaten path. Jeju’s phenomenal natural beauty, historical legacies, quirky museums, and array of water sports make it one of the best vacation spots in Korea. |

|
||||||||
Among all of
Jeju’s natural wonders, three sites have been recognized as World Heritage
Sites by UNESCO (2007): Hallasan Mountain, Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, and the
Geomunoreum Lava Tube System. Hallasan Mountain is perhaps Jeju’s most
prominent geographical feature, rising out of the very center of the island.
Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak has been recognized for its sedimentological
characteristics and is one of the best places in the world to study
Surtseyan-type volcanic eruptions. The third and final World Heritage Site is
Geomunoreum Lava Tube System, one of the most extensive series of lava tube
caves in the world.

EIFFEL TOWER
Once the tallest structure in the
world, the Eiffel Tower is probably Europe's best known landmark and Paris's
most famous symbol.
You couldn't possibly visit Paris without seeing the
Eiffel Tower. Even if you do not want to visit this world famous structure, you
will see its top from all over Paris. The tower rises 300 meters tall (984 ft);
when it was completed at the end of the nineteenth century it was twice as high
as the Washington
Monument, at the time the tallest structure in the world.
1889 World
Exhibition
The Eiffel Tower was built for the World Exhibition in
1889, held in celebration of the French Revolution in 1789. The construction
was only meant to last for the duration of the Exposition, but it still stands
today, despite all protests from contemporary artists who feared the
construction would be the advent of structures without 'individuality' and
despite the many people who feared that this huge 'object' would not fit into
the architecture of Paris.
Today, there is no such aversion anymore among the
Parisians, and one could not imagine Paris without the Eiffel Tower, in fact it
has become the symbol of the City of Light.
Gustave Eiffel
The man behind the Eiffel Tower was
Gustave Eiffel, known from his revolutionary bridge building techniques, as
employed in the great viaduct at Garabit in 1884. These techniques would form
the basis for the construction of the Eiffel Tower. He was also known for the
construction of the Statue of
Liberty's iron
framework. The structure took more than two years to complete. Each one of the
about 12,000 iron pieces were designed separately to give them exactly the
shape needed. All pieces were prefabricated and fit together using approx.
seven million nails.
The Tallest
Inaugurated March 31, 1889, the Eiffel
Tower would be the talles.structure in the world until the completion of the Chrysler Building in 1930.
Lampung has many tourist
destinations where one of the potential for capturing many tourists is the
beach tourism. Call it like white sand beaches and coastal Kalianda the
favorite locations of domestic tourists and it’s always a busy place and
surrounding residents on weekends or during the holiday season arrives.
In addition to these two beaches, there are many really beach - the beach is relatively virgin no less beautiful than Kalianda beaches and white sand beaches. One of them is located in Mutun coast ,not far from the center of Bandar Lampung. Only takes around 20 - 30 minutes to reach this beach by car or motorbike. Moreover, the royal road to this area fairly smooth. Scenery along the road to the mutun beach is also good to pass up. The beauty of green trees, fields and mountains can be enjoyed throughout the journey.
To enter the Coast Mutun,it’s charged Rp. 2500, - per person and Rp. 5000, - for the car. After parking places provided, we can enjoy the beach atmosphere by sitting in the cabin that can be rented for a rest. The atmosphere of the beach while the weekends are very crowded, many people who enjoy the beach by swimming, for who cannot swim can rent a tire / buoy or doing water sports like canoeing. With rental costs around Rp 10 thousand - Rp20 thousand per canoe, we can enjoy this sport for an hour. Many are also among the visitors who snorkeling at sea around the coast.
If we want to enjoy the beach and the sea far cleaner from the beach Mutun, we can cross to the small island opposite the beach called the island Tangkil. To reach the island's,there are many available boats that ready to take us, only with Rp. 5000, - we will be delivered back off the Islands. Arriving on the island Tangkil, we can ask the owner of the boat to pick us back in time that we set.
Tangkil island atmosphere is much more beautiful than Mutun beach, the beach is cleaner and the atmosphere is not crowded so that we can feel it more comfortable for swimming or just walking around the beach on the island. But be careful if you want to swim here, because in some places there are many sea urchins and you could be trampled. On the island there are also cabins that can be rented for a rest. And, in the middle of the island located to conduct outbound games.
If we want to visit the Mutun beach
on the holiday, we should have left since the morning, if it’s not it
might be already full of visitors there.

JEONGBANG
WATERFALL IN JEJU ISLAND
Jeongbang Waterfall is considered as
one of the primary attractions of Jeju Island. It is especially famous for its
clear waters directly falling into the ocean – the only one of its kind in
Asia. On the waterfall’s wall is an inscription that reads “Seobulgwacha” –
this pertains to Seobul who passed by the place thousands of years ago.
According to history, dating back to the reign of Emperor Jin (259-210 BC),
Seobul was tasked by the powerful emperor to find the magical substance that
has the power to grant him immortality.
The waterfall itself is nothing but majestic, a truly
grand and incomparable view. To see the beautifully cascading waters falling
from the edge of a cliff, you only need to take a short walk through a quaint
park leading up to the waterfall’s entrance. From there, you only need to take
a short 2-minute walk to get to the foot of the falls – the best place to take
pictures. In the surrounding area of the Jeongbang Waterfall, you can find locals
selling fresh seafoods – quite a treat for seafood lovers out there!
Jeongbang Waterfall is conveniently located on a high
cliff just close to the sea, which makes it a great place to relax on a hot
summer day. On the eastern side, approximately 300 meters, is another lovely
waterfall – the Sojeongbang Waterfall. An observatory can be found at the top
of a cliff where you can get a good view of the sea and the picturesque scenery
below.

History of Hagia Sophia Museum
|
The Hagia Sophia, one of the historical architectural
wonders that still remains standing today, has an important place in the art
world with its architecture, grandness, size and functionality.
The Hagia Sophia, the biggest church constructed by the
East Roman Empire in Istanbul, has been constructed three times in the same
location. When it was first built, it was named Megale Ekklesia (Big Church);
however, after the fifth century, it was referred to as the Hagia Sophia
(Holy Wisdom). The church was the place in which rulers were crowned, and it
was also the biggest operational cathedral in the city throughout the
Byzantine period.
The first church was constructed by Emperor Konstantios
(337-361) in 360. The first church was covered with a wooden roof and
expanded vertically (basilica) yet was burned down after the public riot that
took place in 404 as a result of the disagreements between Emperor Arkadios’
(395-408) wife empress Eudoksia and Istanbul’s patriarch Ioannes
Chrysostomos, who was exiled. The patriarch’s mosaic portrait can still be
viewed at the tymphanon wall located in the northern part of the church. No
remains have been recovered from the first church; however, the bricks found
in the museum storage branded ‘Megale Ekklesia’ are predicted to belong to
the first construction.
The second church was reconstructed by Emperor
Theodosios II (408-450) in 415. This basilical structure is known to contain
five naves and a monumental entrance; it is also covered by a wooden roof.
The church was demolished in January 13, 532, after the
public riot (Nika revolts) that took place during the fifth year of Emperor
Justinianos’ reign (527-565), when the ‘blues’ who represented the
aristocrats, and the ‘greens’ who represented the tradesman and merchants in
the society, collaborated against the Empire.
|
Remains
found during the excavations led by A. M Scheinder of the Istanbul German
Archeology Institute, 2 meters below ground level, include steps belonging to
the Propylon (monumental door), column bases and pieces with lamb embossings
that represent the 12 apostles. In addition, other architectural pieces that
belong to the monumental entrance can be seen in the west garden.
The current structure was constructed by Isidoros (Milet) and Anthemios (Tralles), who were renowned architects of their time, by Emperor Justinianos’s (527-565) orders. Information from historian Prokopios states that the construction that began on February 23, 532, was completed in a short period of five years and the church was opened to worship with a ceremony on December 27, 537. Resources show that on the opening day of the Hagia Sophia, Emperor Justinianos entered the temple and said, “My Lord, thank you for giving me chance to create such a worshipping place,” and followed with the words “Süleyman, I beat you,” referring to Süleyman’s temple in Jerusalem.

The
third Hagia Sophia construction combined the three traditional basilical plans
with the central dome plan in design. The structure has three nefi, one apsi,
and two narthex, internal and external. The length from the apsis to the outer
narthex is 100 m, and the width is 69.5 m. The height of the dome from the
ground level is 55.60 m and the radius is 31.87 m in the North to South
direction and 30.86 in the East to West direction.
Emperor Justinianos ordered all provinces under his reign to send the best architectural pieces to be used in the construction so that the Hagia Sophia could be bigger and grander. The columns and marbles used in the structure have been taken from ancient cities in and around Anatolia and Syria, such as, Aspendus Ephessus, Baalbeek and Tarsa.
The white marbles used in the structure came from the Marmara Island, the green porphyry from Eğriboz Island, the pink marbles from Afyon and the yellow from North Africa. The decorative interior wall coatings were established by dividing single marble blocks into two and combining them in order to create symmetrical shapes.
In addition, the structure includes columns brought in from the Temple of Artemis in Ephessus to be used in the naves, as well as 8 columns brought from Egypt that support the domes. The structure has a total of 104 columns, 40 in the lower and 64 in the upper gallery.
All the walls of the Hagia Sophia except the ones covered by marble have been decorated with exceptionally beautiful mosaics. Gold, silver, glass, terra cotta and colorful stones have been used to make the mosaics.

The plant-based and
geometric mosaics are from the 6th century, whereas the figured mosaics date
back to the Iconoclast period.
During the East Roman period, the Hagia Sophia was the Empire Church and, as a result, was the place in which the emperors were crowned. The area that is on the right of the naos, where the flooring is covered with colorful stones creating an intertwining circular design (omphalion), is the section in which the Eastern Roman Emperors were crowned.
Istanbul was occupied by Latins between 1204 and 1261, during the Holy Crusades, when both the city and the church were damaged. The Hagia Sophia was known to be in bad condition in 1261, when Eastern Rome took over the city again.
Following Fatih Sultan Mehmed’s (1451-1481) conquer in 1453, Hagia Sophia was renovated into a mosque. The structure was fortified and was well protected after this period, and remained as a mosque. Additional supporting pillars were installed during the East Roman and Ottoman periods as a result of the damage that the structure experienced due to earthquakes in the region. The minarets designed and implemented by Mimar Sinan have also served to this purpose.
A madrasah was built towards the North or Hagia Sophia during Fatih Sultan Mehmed’s reign. This construction was abolished in the 17. Century. During Sultan Abdülmecid’s (1839-1861) reign, renovations were conducted by Fossati and a madrasah was rebuilt in the same place. The remains have been discovered during the excavations in 1934.
During the 16th and 17th century Ottoman period, mihrabs, minbar, maksoorahs, a preachment stand and a muezzin mahfili (a special raised platform in a mosque, opposite the minbar where a muezzin kneels and chants in response to the imam’s prayers) were added to the structure.
The bronze lamps on two sides of the mihrab have been given as gifts to the mosque by Kanuni Sultan Süleyman (1520-1566) after his return from Budin.
The two marble cubes dating back to the Hellenistic period (30-330 B.C.) on both sides of the main entrance have been specially brought from Bergama and were given by Sultan Murad III (1574-1595) as gifts.
During the Sultan Abdülmecid period between 1847 and 1849, an extensive renovation in the Hagia Sophia was conducted by the Swiss Fossati brothers, where the Hünkâr Mahfili (a separate compartment where the emperors pray) located in a niche in the Northern section was removed and another one towards the left of the mihrab was built.
The 8- 7.5 m diameter calligraphy panels that were written by Caligrapher Kazasker Mustafa İzzet Efendi were placed in the main walls of the structure. The panels that read “Allah, Hz. Muhammed, Hz. Ebubekir, Hz. Ömer, Hz. Osman, Hz. Ali, Hz. Hasan ve Hz. Hüseyin” are known to be the biggest calligraphy panels in the Islamic world.
The Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s orders and has been functioning as one since February 1, 1935, welcoming both local and foreign visitors. According to a deed dated 1936, the Hagia Sophia is registered as “Ayasofya-i Kebir Camii Şerifi on behalf of the Fatih Sultan Mehmed Foundation for maoseleum, akaret, muvakkithane and madrasah on 57 pafta, 57 island and 7th parcel.”

Prambanan and Borobudur
Close
to Yogya, there are 2 sets of temples: Prambanan and Borobudur. The first one
is Hindu and the second one is considered one of the most important Buddhist
monuments in the world. I visited both of them, starting with Prambanan.
When I
visited Prambanan it was very crowded because of the Indonesian holiday. I got
there around 2pm and was planning on staying at the site till the evening when
the Ramanaya ballet would perform a dance at the temple. The site by itself is
relatively small, so I was done seeing everything within an hour.
Since
I had a lot of time, I decided to just sit somewhere in the shade and read a
book. I didn’t get very far in my reading as, to my greatest surprise, many
Indonesians stopped next to me to take pictures with me. I’m surely not the
first Western person they see, so I couldn’t quite figure out why they wanted
their pictures taken with me. However, within 10 minutes of sitting in my nice
shady corner, a line had formed and people were waiting their turns to take
pictures. I felt a little bit like Santa Claus with people putting their
toddlers in my arms, but because I had nothing better to do, I went with it. It
ended up being quite entertaining actually.
The
Ramanaya dance performance in the evening was very beautiful. The dancing
itself wasn’t quite my taste, but it was worth seeing once. The costumes and
the makeup of the dancers were very intricate, and at some point they even lit
both sides of the stage on fire. The whole performance took place in front of
the temples.
The
next day, I went to see Borobudur. I had to get up by 3am, because I wanted to
see sunrise. This ended up being a good decision, as the sunrise was one of the
most beautiful ones I have seen. The fog in the valley surrounded the temple
and made the whole place look very mystical.
We
arrived at the temple site itself at 6am. But mind you that at 6am, the place
was as busy as times squares. I’m not joking… I blame it on the Indonesian holiday
again… Borobudur is like a pyramid of small Buddhas. I fought my way to the
top, took a few pictures and then immediately went to visit some of the lower
levels of this pyramid. I was lucky that most Indonesians didn’t seem to
appreciate the lower levels as much. There were only few people at each level
and, to some extent, I could have part of the complex to myself. The Buddhas
and the other stone carvings at each level were very beautiful. I was told that
they depict the story of Buddhas life.
I am glad
I visited Prambanan and Borobudur. They were both impressive monuments, but I
can only imagine how much nicer it would have been without the crowd.
