The Amityville Horror - A True Story
The Amityville Horror - A True Story is a book written by Jay Anson , published in September 1977 . This book is also the basis for a series of films made between 1979 and 2005. Stories are based
on true story, but has sparked case and controversy from the actual story.
In December 1975 , George and Kathleen and their children moved into a house at 112 Ocean Avenue , a colonial mansion Dutch inAmityville , a suburban neighborhood in southern Long Island , New York . Thirteen months before the
Lutz family moved in, Ronald DeFeo, Jr.. , the previous owner, had shot dead six
members of his family in the house. After 28 days Lutz family lived in the house, they began to
feel strange things with the house.
The
house numbered 112 Ocean Avenue has been vacant for 13 months after the DeFeo
killings, until in December 1975 Lutz family bought the house for $ 80,000. The house has six
bedrooms was built by the Dutch colonial style, and has a curved roof. The house is equipped
with a swimming pool and a house boat storage area. George and Kathy were
married in July 1975 and
have homes of their own, but would like to start afresh with a new home. Kathy had three
children from a previous marriage, Daniel (9), Christopher (7), and Melissa aka
Missy (5). They also have a Labrador dog named
Harry. During their current
checker will buy the house, by their agents has been advised of the murders
committed by DeFeo, but they think it was not a problem.
The Lutz family moved
house on 18 December 1975 . Most of the DeFeo
family furniture was still there, because everything is included in the
purchase agreement. A
friend of George Lutz learned about the past history of the house, and urged
them to do the blessing. But they do not
understand his ways. George knew a
Catholic priest named Father Ray, and he was willing to do the blessing. (In Anson's book is
mentioned the name Reverend Father Mancuso. This is done to maintain the
privacy of the pastor, his real name was Father Ralph J. Pecoraro).
Father Mancuso was a lawyer, a
Catholic priest, and a psychotherapist who lived at Sacred Heart Rectory. He
arrived to carry out a blessing on the afternoon of December 18, 1975 when
George and Kathy were unpacking their belongings. When he flicked the
first holy water and began to pray, he heard a clear voice that says "Get
out!" - "Get out!". While leaving the house, he did
not mention it to George and Kathy. On December 24, 1975 , Father Mancuso called George Lutz and advised him
not to use the space where he had heard the strange sound. This room is
planned Kathy used as a sewing room, and was once the bedroom of Marc and John
Matthew DeFeo. Phone conversation abruptly disconnected, and the next
visit to the house of the Father Mancuso resulting high fever and found marks
on his arms similar to the marks of the stigmata .
At first, George and Kathy Lutz does
not feel strange with their homes. But then, they felt that "each one
of them lived in a different house."
Most of the Lutz family experiences
are described as follows:
·
George
always woke up at around 03:15 every morning, and then out to the boat storage
area. The time estimated time of the DeFeo killings.
·
Their
home is always plagued by a swarm of flies in every winter.
·
Kathy
had vivid nightmares about the murder and the time when he made the home
purchase agreement. Their children also began sleeping in prone, the same
position when the bodies were discovered DeFeo.
·
Kathy
felt as if "being embraced" in a loving manner, by an unseen force.
·
Kathy
discovered a small hidden room (around four feet) at the back of the basement. The
walls were painted red and the room did not look at the house plans. The
room was then known as "The Red Room". This room has an
influence on their dog Harry, who refused to go near it and cowered as if
sensing something negative.
·
There
were cold spots and odors of perfume and excrement in the house, where no wind
drafts or piping would explain the source.
·
Their
daughter who was five years old, Missy, developed an imaginary friend named
"Jodie" which has glowing red eyes.
·
George
always awakened by the sound of the front door slamming. He would race
downstairs to find the dog sleeping soundly at the front door. No one else
heard it except her voice.
·
George
would hear what was described as a "German marching band" or sound
like a radio that is not set to the right frequency. But when he went to
the bottom floor, the noise will stop.
·
George
realized that he bore a strong resemblance to Ronald DeFeo, Jr.. , and began bermabukan
in The Witches' Brew, the bar where DeFeo was one of his
customers.
·
When
checking the boat storage area on one night, George saw a pair of red eyes that
were watching him from Missy's bedroom window. When he went upstairs to
her room, she did not find anything. Then concluded that it was
"Jodie".
·
While
in bed, Kathy received red welts on her chest caused by an unseen force and was
levitated two feet off the bed.
·
Locks,
windows, and doors were damaged by an unseen force.
·
There
are parts of the large claws in the snow which is then connected to a pig big on January 1st 1976 .
·
From
the halls and walls of the keyhole existing playroom door in the attic out the
green slime.
·
A
12-inch crucifix hung in the restroom Kathy was upside down and gave off a
smell.
·
George
tripped by a ceramic Chinese lion that has
a height of about four feet, which then leaves bite marks on one of his ankles.
·
George
saw Kathy transform into an old woman who was around 90's, "with
disheveled hair, wrinkles and shape the face of the poor, and saliva dripping
from the toothless mouth."
Having
decided that there was something wrong with their homes, which can not be
explained rationally, George and Kathy Lutz carry a blessing in their own way
on January 8 , 1976 . George
holds a cross made of silver while
both recite prayers of the Kings, and from their living room, supposedly a lot
oang voice chorus, urging them to stop: "Will you stop!".
In mid- January 1976 ,
and after blessing the efforts made by George and Kathy, they experienced
something that later became the last night they were in the house. Lutz family considers
that all events that occur as something very scary, "too frightening".
After consulting with
Father Mancuso, they decided to take some belongings and decided to stay at
home mom Kathy near Deer
Park, New York. On January 14th 1976 ,
George and Kathy Lutz and their three children with a dog they
are Harry, left the house and left the stuff behind the house. The next day, a
repairman assigned to move the goods to be sent to the family of Lutz. He reported no
abnormal phenomenon in the house. [3]
This book was written
after Tam Mossman, an editor at Prentice Hall who introduced George and Kathy
Lutz to Jay Anson. They do not work
directly with Anson, but delivered through a tape recording that lasted about
45 hours, which later became the basis for writing this book. This book sales reach
an estimated ten million copies of several editions. Anson said to take
the basic title of his book "The Amityville Horror" from "The
Dunwich Horror" by HP Lovecraft ,
published in 1929.
The story of
"The Amityville Horror" followed by a series of books created by John
G. Jones. The series are The
Amityville Horror Part II (1982), Amityville
- The Final Chapter(1985), Amityville
- The Evil Escapes (1988)
and Amityville - The
Horror Returns (1989).
In 1991,
"Amityville - The Nightmare Continues" written by Robin Karl was published.
Most of the controversy surrounding "The Amityville
Horror" can be traced back by looking at the book sales from year to year. Cover of this book shows that are written based on a true
story, based on events variable. A comment from the Los Angeles Times are
shown in the front cover: "A fascinating, frightening Scariest BOOK THE
TRUE STORY ... I HAVE READ IN YEARS", and underneath is written:
"MORE THAN hideously frightening BECAUSE IT ACTUALLY The
Exorcist HAPPENED!" This paper explains that this book is more terrible than the
movie The Exorcist because
it is based on a true story. The Exorcist is a hit film in 1973 which tells the old habits
in the 1970s, the expulsion of demons or evil spirits. Many of the events of this book is similar to the model of
the film The Exorcist, this is what causes the appearance of suspicion. Joy Anson explains that "There are many simple
corroborating evidence, which supports the statement of the Lutz family over
these events", but most people still do not believe. Not long after the launch of the book in September 1977 ,
the authors and other researchers began studying the events at 112 Ocean
Avenue, and the conclusions that they get often at odds with those in the Jay
Anson book. The debate on "The Amityville Horror" continues,
and in addition to the absence of evidence from most of the story, but he is
still one of the most popular horror stories in America . Since the family of Lutz let the house in 1976, the
subsequent owners reported no problems with them, no trouble as long as they
live there.
